Dr. Alexander Owusu Acheampong is an accomplished investment and finance professional with over a decade of extensive experience in capital markets, fund management, and corporate financial strategy. He currently serves as the Head of Investments at the Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF), where he leads the institution’s investment portfolio, oversees strategic partnerships with fund managers, and ensures that all investment activities adhere to robust regulatory standards while integrating sustainability and impact-driven investment principles.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Acheampong has managed investment portfolios exceeding USD 300 million, spanning collective investment schemes, pension funds, and diversified money and capital market instruments. He possesses deep expertise in portfolio construction, investment strategy, risk management, and regulatory compliance, and is widely regarded within Ghana’s financial services industry for his strategic leadership, analytical rigor, and strong commitment to transparency and good governance.
Dr. Acheampong began his professional career in development finance, where he contributed meaningfully to Ghana’s SME policy landscape. During his tenure at the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), he played a role in the development of the SME Charter of Ghana, supported the implementation of the AGI Business Barometer Survey, and contributed to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Survey, providing critical data and insights on Ghana’s economic performance and private sector competitiveness.
Prior to joining the Venture Capital Trust Fund, Dr. Acheampong held several progressive leadership roles within the capital markets industry, rising through the ranks from SME Advisor to Head of Asset Management, and subsequently to Associate Executive Director (Operations). In these roles, he was instrumental in designing innovative fund strategies, leading high-performing investment teams, strengthening operational systems, and improving governance and compliance frameworks across investment operations.
Alongside his professional career, Dr. Acheampong has maintained a strong engagement with academia. He previously served as a lecturer at the University of Essex Business School in the United Kingdom, where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in financial analysis and management accounting. His academic research focuses on corporate governance, financial sustainability, and investment strategies in emerging markets, contributing to broader discussions on responsible investment and institutional development.
Dr. Acheampong holds a PhD in Accounting and Finance from the Essex Business School, University of Essex, where his doctoral research specialised in corporate governance of Banks in Ghana. He also holds an MSc in International Business and Finance from the University of Aberdeen, an MBA in Marketing from Sikkim Manipal University, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Cape Coast.
